Study Marine Engineering in Abroad

Many students have asked me the difference between maritime studies, marine engineering, ocean engineering and naval architecture; I have tried explaining this as easily as possible to give them an idea about all three courses. In general, all these programs are interconnected, in the sense, the marine engineer is mainly responsible for designing and building various types of ships, and other sea worthy structures, the marine studies can also be referred to as coastal or off shore engineering, ocean or oceanographic engineering, naval architecture, naval construction or naval engineering.

In general, all the above mentioned engineers work on the design, build and maintain ships from aircraft to submarines , from sail boats to tankers , the marine engineering work on the mechanical systems such as propulsion and steering, which includes the main engine, reduction gears, shafting and the auxiliary machinery which supports the propulsion systems. , where as the naval architects work on the basic design, including the form and stability of the hull, hull resistances, hull structure, etc, ocean engineering is a little more broader, refers to designing anything from terminals and marinas to off shoe platforms to mooring systems. It is heavier in hydrodynamics and soils, closer to civil engineering.

The marine engineers are also responsible for the heating, ventilation and air condition systems, fire fighting systems, portable water systems, the electric power distribution , and just about any machinery which exists in the ship.

The ocean engineering studies will also include beach protection, , coastal structures, development of ocean energy sources, instruments for coastal and offshore measurements, marine dredging, moored and towed systems, ocean mining, off shore petroleum recovery, off shore structures, ports and harbors, subsea pipe lines and cables, submersible vehicles, and under water acoustics and many more.

Apart from Masters in marine, naval , offshore ocean engineering etc, environmental engineering could also be another area which can be pursued, since, the program is the study of treatment processing and equipments, waste transfer technology, mechanical biological treatment, waste to energy treatment etc,provided they are related to the ocean. Masters in energy or energy management could also be pursued in the USA, it’s more common to find masters in ocean engineering than Marine and naval architecture. The Michigan Ann Arbor offers the Marine engineering program , where as more universities offer masters in  ocean engineering like the university of Rhode islands, FIT, Oregon state university, the university of new Orleans and of course MIT to name a few. In Canada, the UBC has the masters in costal and ocean engineering, and also in Newfoundland university, again the choice of universities is less in  both the countries.

Where Europe is concerned, again, not many universities to choose form, Norway has an interesting program in KTH royal technology on masters in marine technology where, the students get an opportunity to study in other countries like Denmark , Sweden and Finland. The program is structured in 2 paths, where, in the 2nd yr the students study  passenger ships in Aalto university, ship design in Sweden , ship operations in Denmark , small craft in Sweden and finally again in Norway to complete the program. France, University of Nantes gives you the masters in ship operations. Netherlands, Delft university of Technology is another good option for the program. UK has a few universities like Cranfield, strathclyde university, New castle to name a few..

Similarly Australia has around 3 universities offering master sin marine engineering, University of Curtin, Adelaide and Tasmania

Opportunities after the graduation are plenty, whether you want to design a row boat to a battleship, build an alternative energy systems, protect the coast lines form ocean forces , reduce energy consumption  of ships cruising the oceans, maintenance positions as in barge engineers, electric engineers, subsea engineers, safety officers, there are plenty of options.
